I need to tell you something that might surprise you, coming from a CTO who just wrote a three-part series on how AI is the greatest force multiplier of his career.

I barely write code anymore. My first instinct, on almost any problem, is to ask Claude. I’ve shipped more in the last fifteen months than in the previous five years combined — and I’ve done it by delegating the execution to an AI while I direct the thinking.

That’s the glass half full.

Here’s the glass half empty: some of my skills are eroding. The muscle memory of syntax. The four-hour solo debugging session where you grind through a problem until it yields. A certain kind of self-reliance — the satisfaction of I figured this out myself. I can feel it fading. And if I’m honest, that unsettles me.

This post is about both glasses. Because the conversation about AI and cognition desperately needs both.


We’ve been here before

My father wrote beautiful calligraphy. Precise, deliberate, every stroke considered. I learned it from him — and for a while, I could do it too. Then came typing. Then computers. Then voice recognition. If I sat down and made a real effort, I could still produce something passable. But the skill has eroded, not because I forgot, but because faster tools made the slow art unnecessary. Now that I have Claude, even typing feels like a detour.

Three generations under one roof. My father’s calligraphy. My typing. My daughter’s voice commands. Each generation traded a skill for speed and leverage. Each trade was real — something was genuinely lost, something was genuinely gained. And none of it made the next generation less intelligent. Just differently equipped.

This isn’t new. In 370 BC, Socrates warned that writing itself would destroy memory. He was talking to Phaedrus about the invention of the alphabet, and his concern was genuine: if people could write things down, they would stop holding knowledge in their minds. They would become forgetful.

He was right. And he was irrelevant. Because what writing freed up — the cognitive bandwidth that no longer needed to be spent on memorization — got redirected toward logic, abstraction, philosophy, science. The very disciplines that Socrates himself practiced. The trade wasn’t a loss. It was a restructuring.

Every major cognitive tool in human history has followed the same pattern:

Calculators replaced mental arithmetic. An entire generation lost the ability to do long division in their heads. They gained the ability to think about higher-order mathematical problems instead of grinding through computation.

Search engines replaced the need to retain facts. Nobody memorizes phone numbers anymore. But the freed bandwidth went toward synthesis — connecting ideas across domains, evaluating sources, building on existing knowledge rather than storing it.

GPS replaced spatial navigation. And this one hits close to home.


Is the sun coming up?

My seventeen-year-old daughter’s CarPlay stopped working recently. She problem-solved — “I don’t need CarPlay, I’ll use voice navigation” — and got herself home. Smart kid. But the underlying skill — the spatial awareness that says I’m heading west, I need to go north, so I’ll take the next right — that was never built. The tool was always there, so the muscle never had to develop.

There’s a scene in The Avengers that I think about. The helicarrier has taken damage and Fury needs to move.

Nick Fury: “Bring the carrier about to 180, headed south. Take us to the water.”

Pilot: “We’re flying blind! Navigation’s recalibrating after the engine failure!”

Nick Fury: (exasperated) “Is the sun coming up?”

Pilot: “Yes, sir.”

Nick Fury: “Then put it on the left.”

That’s decades of lived experience in one sentence. The tools went dark, and what remained was the pattern library — the accumulated knowledge that doesn’t depend on any system staying online.

The question AI forces us to ask is the same one that GPS, calculators, and writing forced before it: when the tool goes dark, what do you fall back on?

If you never built the underlying skill, the answer is nothing. If you built it and then gained a tool that amplified it, the answer is everything you’ve always had — plus leverage.


The equation that explains everything

E=mc². Five characters. The most famous equation in human history.

It gave us nuclear energy — clean power that lights cities. It also gave us nuclear weapons — the capacity to end civilization in an afternoon. The equation didn’t decide which. We did.

AI is the same equation. The same technology that compressed 22 person-weeks into 7 working days for me is the same technology producing deepfake evidence in courtrooms, automating social engineering at scale, and — according to an MIT study — measurably weakening the brain activity of students who use it to write their essays.

The researchers found that students using AI chatbots exhibited weaker alpha and theta brain waves, bypassing the deep memory processes that encode learning. Their essays lacked originality. And here’s the part that should alarm everyone: they couldn’t remember their own work.

Same tool. Three relationships:

Productive: You direct the AI with judgment, experience, and context. It amplifies your capability. You produce results neither of you could achieve alone.

Passive: You accept AI outputs without critical engagement. Over time, the muscles atrophy. A recent study coined a term for this that stopped me cold: cognitive surrender — the outsourcing of thinking itself.

Adversarial: Someone with intent uses AI to manipulate, deceive, or exploit at a scale no human operation could match.

Einstein’s equation didn’t choose between the power plant and the bomb. Neither does AI. The hand directing it decides.


What are we actually losing?

I want to be specific about this, because the conversation tends to drift into either panic or dismissal.

What’s eroding — and I’m speaking from personal experience, not theory:

The hands-on coding fluency. The debugging instinct that comes from hours of solo struggle. The patience to sit with a problem long enough for the deeper processor to surface an answer. A certain independence — the knowledge that you can figure it out yourself, because you’ve done it before.

Anthropic’s own study of 80,000 Claude users — the largest qualitative study of AI use ever conducted — found that users are increasingly turning to AI not just for information but for emotional support, personal reflection, and life decisions. The tool is migrating from assistant to companion. From utility to relationship.

That migration is where surrender lives. Not in using AI for work. In forgetting how to sit with a hard question long enough to answer it yourself.

And yet. Someone close to me recently wrote the most important essay of his life — one that would determine the next decade of his career. He refused to use AI. He sat with the blank page, struggled with the words, rewrote, reconsidered, and pushed through. When he was done, his advisor — someone who has read thousands of these essays — told him it was one of the best he’d ever seen. The depth of feeling, the structural artistry, the voice — none of it could have been built by prompting a model. It was built by sitting in the discomfort of not knowing what to write next and pushing through anyway.

That’s the muscle. That’s what atrophies if you never use it. And that’s what no amount of AI fluency can replace.


What are we gaining?

Here’s where I part ways with the doomsayers.

Direction over execution. I’m not a worse engineer because I delegate code generation to AI. I’m a different kind of engineer — one who operates at a higher altitude. The architecture, the judgment calls, the pattern recognition, the knowing-what-to-build — those skills aren’t eroding. They’re being exercised more intensely than ever, because the execution bottleneck is gone.

Judgment at speed. Every time I review AI output — accept this, reject that, redirect here — I’m exercising evaluation and critical thinking at a pace that wasn’t possible before. The reps are faster. The feedback loop is tighter.

Synthesis across domains. This blog is the proof. In the last three months, I’ve connected Vedanta to AI consciousness, tennis flow states to neuroscience, my father’s film career to startup entrepreneurship, and a scene from The Avengers to the future of cognition. AI enabled the cross-pollination. I saw the connections. That’s a skill that’s growing, not shrinking.

Idea realization. The thoughts that used to stay trapped — too complex to execute alone, too time-consuming to justify — now see the light of day. The bottleneck was never my thinking. It was the bandwidth to act on it. AI removed the bottleneck.

A CEO doesn’t lose skills by hiring a team. They trade execution skills for leverage skills. That’s what’s happening to every knowledge worker who uses AI with intention — whether they realize it or not.


Surrender vs. direction

This is the crux.

Cognitive surrender looks like this: “What should I do?” You accept the answer. You move on. The thinking was outsourced. The muscle never fired.

Cognitive direction looks like this: “Here’s my problem. Here’s my context. Here are my constraints. Here’s what I’ve tried and why it didn’t work. Help me think through this.” You evaluate the output. You edit it with judgment. You decide.

One is a crutch. The other is a lever.

And the difference between the two — the thing that determines which relationship you have with the most powerful cognitive tool ever built — is the very thing the pessimists say AI will destroy: experience, critical thinking, and the willingness to struggle.

The irony is precise. The skills you need to use AI well are the same skills that AI threatens to erode if you use it passively. The antidote to cognitive surrender is cognitive direction. And cognitive direction requires exactly what it sounds like: a mind that knows where it’s going.


The trade

Every generation makes a cognitive trade. Writing for memory. Calculation for arithmetic. Navigation for spatial awareness. The trade is never free, and the loss is always real.

But the trade is also never just a loss. What gets freed up goes somewhere. The question — the only question that matters — is where you direct it.

AI is the biggest cognitive trade in human history. It is restructuring how we think, what we retain, how we solve problems, and what we consider worth struggling through. That restructuring can go in the direction of atrophy or in the direction of leverage.

The equation doesn’t decide. You do.
